Australia: Certified Local Occupation Data
TransparentRate uses the Australian Bureau of Statistics Employee Earnings and Hours, May 2025 release as the official local source. The primary statistic is all-employees/persons average weekly total cash earnings, published in AUD per week. Wage cells are taken at ANZSCO 4-digit unit-group level, with ANZSCO 6-digit titles used as mapping evidence.
Across the 98 TransparentRate occupations, the certified mapping contains 39 Direct, 39 Strong, 18 Context Only, and 2 Unsupported records. The 78 Direct or Strong primary records cover 1,568 of 1,794 searchable aliases. Context Only and Unsupported records never receive an Australian primary value.
The ABS employee statistic is shown in its native weekly unit and the modeled freelance planning benchmark applies the provisional 1.75 coefficient once. TransparentRate does not infer hourly or annual equivalents, add a target markup, or compare the weekly local statistic to the separate hourly U.S.-anchored reference by percentage.
Source limitations: EEH is an employer survey and excludes freelancers and self-employed workers. Published standard errors and relative standard errors remain attached to the relevant records; for example, Scriptwriter carries a 34.1% RSE caution. A high-uncertainty value remains labeled rather than silently upgraded.
Disclaimer: TransparentRate provides planning estimates only — not financial advice. The official ABS figure remains employee-wage evidence; the 1.75 conversion is a TransparentRate model assumption. Full details are in the methodology.
Sydney and Melbourne vs. the Rest of Australia
Australia's freelance market is heavily concentrated on the east coast:
- Sydney: The country's finance and corporate capital. Banking, insurance, and enterprise clients can support higher contractor pricing for senior technical and consulting work.
- Melbourne: Strong in creative services, agencies, retail head offices, and a substantial tech scene. Rates broadly track Sydney's, with the creative sector particularly deep.
- Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide: Perth's resources sector pays well for specialised engineering and project consulting; Brisbane and Adelaide typically sit somewhat below the Sydney–Melbourne benchmark for generalist work.
- Regional and remote: Local demand can differ from capital-city markets, while remote-first hiring by Sydney, Melbourne, and overseas clients can narrow that gap.
Australia's time zones are also a genuine pricing factor: overlap with US West Coast mornings and full overlap with Asian business hours make Australian freelancers attractive to clients across the Asia-Pacific region.
Australia-Specific Considerations
ABN and GST
Freelancing in Australia effectively starts with an Australian Business Number (ABN) — most clients won't engage a contractor without one, and invoicing without an ABN can trigger withholding at the top tax rate. Once your annual turnover reaches A$75,000 you must register for GST and add 10% to invoices; registered business clients claim it back, so it's largely neutral in B2B work.
Superannuation
Employees receive compulsory superannuation contributions on top of their salary; freelancers fund their own retirement. This is one of the clearest reasons an hourly freelance rate must exceed the equivalent employee wage — the ×1.75 freelance conversion in our model exists to absorb exactly these self-funded costs. Some contractor arrangements (particularly labour-hire style engagements) still attract super obligations from the payer, so check how each contract is structured.
Day Rates and Contracting Culture
Australian technology and consulting markets, like the UK's, often quote day rates. The calculator deliberately preserves the official ABS weekly employee statistic rather than manufacturing an hourly or daily conversion. Translate a planning benchmark into a client quote only after considering expected billable time, scope, fees, and contract terms. Government contracting is commonly procured through panels and recruiters at day rates.
How the Australian Result Is Presented
When a Direct or Strong, publishable ANZSCO mapping exists, the ABS weekly employee statistic is the local primary and the modeled weekly benchmark appears beside it. Context Only, Unsupported, and unavailable records show no local primary. A separate U.S.-anchored hourly reference remains available for cross-border planning but is never described as Australian official wage data. Compare coverage on the countries index.
FAQ
Should Australian freelancers quote in AUD or USD?
Quote domestic clients in AUD. For US and international clients, many Australian freelancers quote in USD to simplify comparison and hedge their income across currencies — just make sure the converted figure still clears your AUD floor after fees and exchange spread.
Are these rates inclusive of GST?
No. All benchmarks are exclusive of GST. If you're GST-registered, add 10% on top of the quoted rate for Australian clients; exports of services to overseas clients are generally GST-free.
Does TransparentRate use ABS data as the Australian primary?
Yes, for Direct and Strong mappings with publishable EEH wage cells. The native AUD/week statistic is primary; the U.S.-anchored hourly value is a separate international reference. Full details are in the methodology.
